01-12-2009 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE • Library Board--Minutes Monday, January 12, 2009 — 7:00 pm Bluebonnet Room Smith Public Library 800 Thomas Street Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Grace Morrison, Shirley Burnett, Junaid Najamuddin, Lucy Shriver, Brett Bim, Rachel Orozco (Board Liaison) Absent: Eric LeJeune, Courtney Gober CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three (3) minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. PRESENTATION Jerri Smith, Friends President, presented information about upcoming Friends events. Jerri passed out Friends membership forms and encouraged the Library Board to become Friends members. She also talked about the Chocolate Fest that will be held Thursday, February 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Kristine Kahanek is visiting the library on Saturday, February 21 at 10 a.m. She will be available to sign the books. ACTION ITEMS 1. The Library Board Minutes of Monday, November 10, 2008 were approved. January 12,2009 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Agenda Page 2 of 2 DISCUSSION ITEMS The Naming Rights policy was discussed. Rachel explained that the Friends are working on a capital campaign to receive donations from citizens, organizations, and companies. The Naming Rights policy clarifies what is required for a person to have naming rights. The Friends are asking for donations for special spaces, such as study rooms as well as furniture. Rachel reviewed the parts of the Naming Rights policy. Rachel also passed out several examples of Naming Rights Policies so that the Library Board members will be prepared to provide input at the February meeting. The Library Board members suggested Sanden, Burger King, and Countrywide. Rachel has met with Sam Satterwhite and Jenna Lawson. The Library Board gave a list of Top Ten Reasons Libraries Build Community: 1. Meeting place for local scouts 2. Provides a place for children to go after school 3. Social Gathering and Networking Space 4. Access to the internet 5. Place for job searching 6. Provide activities for children 7. Network for young mothers and support system for them during storytime. 8. Free DVD movies 9. Home school resources 10. ESL resources 10. Multimedia resources 11. Homework preparation 12. Online homework help 13. Develop presentations on the computers for school 14. Opportunity to meet local authors. STAFF REPORTS Rachel passed out the library newsletter. The Library Board was encouraged to attend the MLK Celebration with Katherine Whiteman. The Teen Program will be an Improve Workshop. The Adult Book Club will read Dress Your Family in Corduroy by David Sedaris. In February the library will celebrate Abby's birthday. Rachel handed out a report with the grants submitted in FY 09. The grants will be announced in January and April. Rachel handed out the First Quarter FY 09 report. Rachel is working with the Finance Department on staffing projections for the new building.
