02-09-2009 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, February 9, 2009 — 7:00 pm Bluebonnet Room Smith Public Library 800 Thomas Street Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Grace Morrison, Shirley Burnett, Junaid Najamuddin, Lucy Shriver, Brett Bim, Rachel Orozco (Board Liaison) Absent: Eric LeJeune, Courtney Gober CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three (3) minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. PRESENTATION ACTION ITEMS 1. The Library Board Minutes of Monday, February 9, 2008 were approved. DISCUSSION ITEMS Junaid Najamuddin read the Naming Rights Policy aloud so that Library Board members could edit and make recommendations. Questions: Why have we not included sizes of plaques? It has not been decided yet. Is the first paragraph necessary? "New Smith Public Library" limits it. It was decided to not limit it to just the new library. It was decided to leave the Friends at the beginning of the policy and describe what they do for the library. February 9,2009 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Agenda Page 2 of 2 A question was asked if we should include not just "generosity" but "accomplishments" as well. This is covered when the policy states that a donor can recognize someone who has made extraordinary accomplishments. In-kind: needs to be hyphenated. Will the levels be determined before the policy is complete: The policy will remain general. It was explained that Mindy Manson, City Manager, will be informed of possible donors. Ms. Manson will then report to Mayor and Council. What about using bricks? This has been reviewed by library staff with architects. It was decided to not use bricks. Rachel will incorporate edits and send to the City Attorney STAFF REPORTS Rachel passed out the newsletter. She announced the Kristine Kahanek event. Rachel passed out the monthly report. Grace reported that the Friends Chocolate Fest was a successful event. The Mayor, - Councilwoman Kathy Spillyards and former Mayor John Mondy were also present. Approximately 70 people attended. Shirley Burnett reported on the Library Supporters Conference sponsored by NETLS. Most of the seminars concentrated on non-profit boards rather than the Library Advisory Boards. She said that the legal session was interesting. Grace Morrison passed around a report on the session that explained the difference between Advisory Boards, Governing Boards, and Friends. She also explained that the Library Board may assist with the long range planning. She asked the board members to feel free to bring up any long range plan ideas and technologies.
