03-08-2010 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, March 8, 2010 — 7:00 pm Bluebonnet Room Smith Public Library 800 Thomas Street Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Courtney Gober, Bret Bim, Shirley Burnett, Grace Morrison, Mindy Ayers, Junaid Najamuddin, Rachel Orozco, (Board Liaison) Absent: Lucy Shriver CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three (3) minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. PRESENTATION ACTION ITEMS 1. The Library Board Minutes of Monday, March 8, 2010 were approved with corrections. DISCUSSION ITEMS Patron Behavior Policy The library staff preferred the first introduction to the Patron Behavior Policy because it creates ownership of the library for everybody. The library staff wrote a new introduction combining the two. The staff language is friendlier than the library board's introduction. A library board wanted to know why we separated birds from animals. The unsupervised section still had nine rather than twelve as the age threshold for unattended child. A question was asked between the difference in voyeurism and staring. A section was added to make it clear that "Adults without children". The Teen Center is for ages 12 to 17 so that the teens may have their own space. After much discussion, it was decided to have an adult responsible for children twelve and under. The Library Board suggested that the library staff not wait thirty minutes before calling the police. They suggested that the library staff call the police at closing time rather than wait thirty January 11,2010 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Agenda Page 2 of 2 minutes. The Library Board made changes to the disruptive children paragraph to make it more clear and concise. It was decided to write "depending on the severity of the situation, staff may call911" The Library Board was handed out the procedures for unattended children. Mayor and Council are scheduled to approve the two public art sites for the municipal complex. The artists selected were Steve Gilman, who has proposed monolithic stones with quotes from local Wylie history. Bertelsen and Wang were selected for an interactive art piece, "Living Lens". STAFF REPORTS Rachel announced the Open House on Thursday, March 11 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Mayor will speak at 6:30 p.m. Citizens will have an opportunity to decorate and purchase tiles at $25 and $50 to be displayed in the new library.
