Smith Public Library, 800 Thomas Street, Wylie, Texas. A quorum was
present and notice of the meeting was posted in the time and manner
required by law. Those present were: Rita Smith, Betty Stephens,
Cathie Upshaw, Mary Jo Smith, Barbara Jennings. Also present was the
Library Director, Rosanne Burgess.
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF MINUTES.
The minutes were accepted approved as published except for the ommission
of the names Mary Jo Smith and Cathie Upshaw as attendees.
DISCUSSION OF PLANS FOR SUMMER READING CLUB. Cathie Upshaw announced
that the theme for this summer will be "The Secret Code is R.E.A.D."
The program is provided as a basis for activities by the Texas State
Library in Austin. Posters, book marks and reading logs are printed
and mailed to us. The program will begin the week after school is out
for the summer. Rosanne Burgess, will plan presentations at the schools
for publicity, as well as the posters, etc. that are available. We will
continue to accept volunteers to help coordinate and operate the program.
DISCUSSION OF GRANT APPLICATIONS. Barbara Jennings gave some of the
background information that she and Annette Naish had been working on for
possible outside funding through small grant applications. These grants
will have to be under the sponsorship of the Friends of the Library.
A selection of areas will be decided to pinpoint private organizations
who do 'make grants in those areas. Since there is such a large demand for
grants, it is recommended that we submit a number of smaller grant requests
rather than depend on one or two larger grant applications.
GENERAL DISCUSSION. Requests are being considered for a glass display
cabinet for the library in order to present materials and collections from
within and without the community.
