02-08-1999 (Library) Minutes RITA & TRUETT SMITH LIBRARY BOARD BOARD MEETING The Library Board of the city of Wylie met in regular session on February 8, 1999. at the Library 7:00 p.m. The attendees were: Jim Swartz Gerry Whitt Debra Workman Mary Conely Shirley Burnett Tom Proctor Grace Morrison Mike Collins Matt Ivers Elaine Martin CITIZEN PARTICIPATION Elaine Martin, a Sacshe citizen expressed concerns about children using the Internet. Ms. Martin would like for minors to be asked to leave the library if they are caught viewing "pornography." The Board will consider her suggestions at the March Library Advisory Board Meeting. PRESENTATION 1. Matt Ivers, a member of the horizon Group, a part of the Camp Fire Boys and Girls, presented information on the results of the Community Survey. ACTION ITEMS Approval of the Minutes. 2. Minutes were approved as read from the January 11, 1999, Meeting. DISCUSSION ITEMS 3. Discuss Monthly Report. Shirley asked about purging records. Mignon explained that some records have been purged, and a more complete purge will be done in March 2000 when we have been on Dynix for two years. This is the procedure that most libraries follow. Mignon commented that the reference questions increased significantly. She encourages the staff to record questions to show the need for professional staff and to use for collection development purposes. The circulation is still down from last year but the in-house use continues to increase. 4. Discuss Long Range Plan and Community Survey Presentations for Council. Matt Ivers will be do a presentation to the Council on Community Survey results on March 23. On April 13 Shirley and Tom will do a presentation of the library's long range plan. 5. Discuss National Library Week Activities. The Library will be hosting a "Read-Aloud" on April 15. The Council, City Manager, and Library Advisory Board will be invited to read a story or poem and share with the audience why you use the Library. In addition, the Library will be promoting TLA's Read for Your Life Campaign. The focus of the campaign is to encourage people to use books in addition to electronic resources. 6. Discuss March Library Advisory Board Meeting Date. The Library Advisory Board meeting will be moved from March 9 to March 15. Several board members will be out of town during Spring Break. NEW BUSINESS The E3ond Advisory Board is meeting to determine which items will be placed on the May bond election. They will make recommendations to the Council on March 9, 1999. The Library is being considered for the bond election. The Comprehensive Plan Committee is hosting open meetings for the public. Dates are listed in the Citizen newsletter. Mignon has requested funding for a spot consultant to assist her in writing an RFP for a Long Range Plan. Funds for the consultant to write the Long Range Plan will be requested from 4B funds for FY 2000. OLD BUSINESS ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
