Call to Order
1. Approval of Minutes
Minutes from the April 14, 1997, Library Advisory Board meeting were
approved.
2. Library Renovation and 4B Budget
The Library Board discussed the Grand Opening and commented that is was
successful. Mignon shared the pictures with the Board.
The Construction Company has completed the punch list items. However, the
moving company has not invoiced the Library for the March move. The marquee
sign is still incomplete. Jim Holcomb, purchasing agent, is working to resolve
this issue.
Shirley asked about the possibility of getting an automation system for FY 98.
Mignon commented that she is meeting with Mike on May 14 to discuss the
automation system. She hopes to apply for a matching grant.
3. Discuss Summer Reading Club programs.
Summer Reading Club promotions are underway. The staff is visiting the local
schools and daycares. Four thousand flyers were printed and will be distributed.
This year the Library staff is trying something different by involving adults in
Summer Reading Club. Adults are invited to read with their children and record
the number of hours they spend reading.
The highlight of the Summer Reading Club will be a dog show on July 10.
Several categories will be judged. Mignon is working on recruiting judges for the
event.
4. Discuss Internet access for the Public
Mignon expressed her concern with the censorship issues that Libraries all over
the United States are dealing with. She commented that she is strongly opposed
to censorship; however, she has concerns about the pornographic information
that can be accessed by children. ALA is in litigation with the Supreme Court
over the Communication Decency Act, and a decision is expected at the end of
June or first of July. Mignon had read an article stating that Texas is
considering legislation on filtering software, and she is going to follow up with
TLA and find out more information.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
