1 Work session to discuss City of
Wylie Centennial Celebration .
2 ADJOURN
REPORT OF CENTENNIAL CXi4v1Trill,
I interviewed several people I thought would have some knawledge
of the history of Wylie and would be interested in working up
some plans for the Centennial celebration in 1986.
The Committee at this tirre consists of:
Truett Smith
Rita Smith
Dorothy Garner
Betty Pendergrass
Kathleen Moore
Mr. Womack from First State Bank
We held our first meeting in Truett's Office on May 8, 1985 for the
purpose of discussing their ideas and suggestions so that a plan
of action could be presented to the Chamber of Commerce.
(1) Wylie was narred for W. D. Wylie, the engineer of a Santa Fe train.
Santa Fe ran a special train of 2 or 3 cars on a Saturday morning
for the purpose of selling lots in the area. Mr. Wylie was instrumental
in selling several lots and the town was named for him.
the train was net with a brass band and there was a dinner served in
honor of the visitors who arrived on the train.
Truett's idea is to recreate the day's events. He is going to contact
Santa Fe and ask them to do this again - run a special train to Wylie
on some Saturday we select. He thinks it should be earlier than the
Jubilee week in July which would be pretty hot. Suggested May or June.
It would be great publicity for Santa Fe and the town.
There are a number of direct descendants of the passengers on the train
and early settlers in Wylie - we will get the names and addresses from
newspaper morgue and other lists and invite all of then to come to
Wylie for the big day - hopefully on the special train.
A place to hold the luncheon and plans to honor these people would
have to be arranged.
(2) Program for Centennial events - daily activities - sell ads.
(3) Commission John Pototschnik to paint a composite picture of
Wylie as it was - barns - old well , etc. make prints off of
it and sell them as souvenirs of the Centennial . John to get
his commission off of sales .
(4) Three or Four months before the event start printing advance
publicity in the Wylie News. Let' s try to find the oldest
house and other landmarks .
(5) Style Show - everyone to start collecting old garments/
(6) Program some evening - Old Time Play such as the "Drunkard
which the Methodists put on a couple of years ago was a
suggestion.
(7) Have an old-fashioned "Saturday Night"
The stores stay open until midnight - music, band, food
• (8) have an art show - something like we used to have in the
Bank.
(8) or if we can get -a location donated - have a museum which
could include the art show as well as artifacts or memorabilia
which some of the older residents of Wylie would like to
• display .
