Minutes were approved as read from the April 9, 2001, meeting. 2. Discuss Monthly Report. The checkouts were up 57% from April 2000. Mignon prepared graphs again for the Board, and they like the visuals of how much statistics are increasing. Tricia Smith, Children's Programming Coordinator, provided a SRC promotional program for the students at the four elementary schools and Intermediate School. 3. Discuss Computer Problems. The Library experienced a computer crash on all the public computers on April 26. A new virus caused the crash. (Since the virus was brand new, virus software would not have prevented this crash.) Paul Wilson, computer consultant, is working with Mignon to research virus software for networks. The virus software will not work on individual computers because it conflicts with the security software. Another problem occurred with the computer security this month. The staff discovered that patrons could access the Internet through the database computers. These computers are supposed to be database access only. Paul Wilson, computer consultant, fixed the problem by limiting which IP addresses patrons can go to. Another problem occurred with the public access Internet computers. Patrons are changing the library's home page. The policy states that a library card is required to use the Internet. Staff is taking the card and keeping it behind the desk. After the patron completes their research, a staff member checks to make sure the homepage is set correctly. 4. Discuss Children's Internet Protection Act. Libraries that receive ERATE discounts are going to be required to filter under the new CIPA law that became effective in April 2001. Other federal funding that is received through NETLS from IMLS could possibly cause libraries to filter. The IMLS will determine if they are going to require libraries to filter. If this library continues to receive ERATE funding, a letter will have to be submitted no later than October 28, 2001 stating that we are researching filtering software and preparing to filter. The pending state legislation regarding filtering did not pass through legislation. NEW BUSINESS " The Friends of the Library Book Sale is June 4-8. Clifford will kick-off the book sale on June 4. The Library received a large book donation from Pat Riehm. The staff is going through them to decide which ones will go into the collection. Mignon and Tricia will be staffing a booth at the Character Education fair on Saturday, May 18. Bookmarks, buttons, and brochures will be distributed to promote Summer Reading Club.
