For MAY, 1995
Issue
Library circulation statistics for the month of May, 1995.
Background
Circulation is up from the past two years. We had six teachers bring their classes from
Hartman and Birmingham this year for library tours and to receive library cards.

Board/Commission Recommendation
Doing programs for all age levels to help boost circulation and let the public know we are
here to help them with all their informational needs.
Staff Recommendation
Pick-A-Book program will continue and run simultaneously with the Texas Reading
Program. In May we are returning to the original book as a give-away. We will continuing
our program called Family Reading Night to encourage the parents to pick a night to turn
the TV off and read to their children or let their children read to them. The library's family
reading night will be third Tuesday of each month.. We continue to have reading records,
book- marks, etc. to hand out to the parents. Preschool Story Time has been postponed
until July when it will become a part of the Texas Reading Club.. In May we conducted a
reading program with McDonald's called Solve Mysteries-Read. We had extended this
program to run through June.

Board has recommended we participate in the parade. Now it must be decided if we are

Staff Recommendations
We will need help in moving numerous cartons of books to the community room. Tables will
have to set up and books placed on the tables to make them easier to be viewed. I
recommend we set one price on hard bound books and one price on paperbacks. The books
are mostly adult so i see this as the easiest method to categorize. It will be necessary for
someone to man the sale so I recommend we not begin it until the parade is completed.
These monies should be placed in the Friends of the Library account to help with their on
going project.

Library had open house in December and it was not successful.. I�

Board recommended having the Open House during the July Jubilee and that it might be
more success.
Staff Recommendation
The staff will have Library Brochure, magnets, pins, pencils etc. to give away during the
open house. We will have refreshments in the community room through out the day. Literacy
will have a table set up with their information to give to interested patrons. Patrons will have
the opportunity to sign up in the library volunteer program.

Planet will Begin registration the first week in July.

Geri Klesel has been working very hard preparing the sumer reading club this year. We are
all looking forward to it being as successful as last year.

Board Meeting
May 8, 1995
The Library Board of the City of Wylie met in regular session on May 8, 1995, in
the work room of the Rita&Truett Smith Public Library, at 7:00 PM. The attendees
were:

Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
#1 - Required changes to the 04-10-95 meeting minutes.
Item#1, Add Mayor Schwartz to the 04-10-95 attendance list.
Item#2, Change "itemized report" to be "circulation statistics".
Item#3, Reflect the fact that the tables do not need to be moved into the
Bluebonnet room for future meetings.
#2 - The April minutes were approved pending changes.
#3 - Discuss and consider the monthly reports.
The monthly reports were reviewed, discussed and approved. The board stated
that they would like to see library facility utilization increased. The board also
noted that video usage was up.
#4 - Discuss and consider the format and content of the upcoming library survey.
The board agreed that there needs to be more editing and layout work done. Per
the City Manager,the final product has to be submitting to the City by COB
05-19-95. Jerri Smith, Pat Guess,and Shirley Burnett will meet with Phyllis on
05-15-95,to produce the final version.
#5 - Discussion of library publicity ideas for the"Wylie Jubilee".
Several ideas were debated. Final decisions were deferred until Phyllis is
available for consultation. Drawing will be done only for the Jubilee event.
Surveys are due back by 06-20-95.
#6 - Discussion of the library budget priorities for the.5 cent sales tax funds.
The library boards budget proposal is due in by 09-30-95.
#7 - The meeting was adjourned.

Birmingham House Activities
Issue
Birmingham House well has been reserved for use by the library. This should be used as a
place to distribute surveys and other library related materials.

Before during and after the actual parade a representative from the library will be at the well
with surveys to be filled out and for filling the surveys out we will be giving them a wrapped
book from the library collection.
Staff Recommendations
Staff will begin wrapping books to have to give away. Magnets, pins and pencils will also be
available to be given away at the well.
