Call to Order
1. Approval of the Minutes.
Minutes from the January meeting were approved as read with one correction.
Gerri Whitt was in attendance at the January meeting.
2. Discuss and Act Upon Approval for the Circulation Policy.
There was a discussion on whether or not to limit the number of materials a
patron can check out. The Board agreed not to place limitations. Books and
other materials will have a check-out period of 14 days rather than 21 days.
Videos will have a checkout period of 4 days. The other major change is the
procedure for sending overdue notices. The first notice will go out as usual on
white paper, the second notice will be sent out on library letterhead, and the
third notice will be on police department letterhead. Hopefully, these changes
will encourage patrons to return materials in a more timely manner. The policy
was approved unanimously by the Library Board.
The new policy will go into effect when the new automation is brought online.
There will be a "Food for Fines" drive in March to give patrons a grace period to
adjust to the changes. Press releases announcing circulation policy changes
will be sent to area newspapers.
3. Discuss Library Automation Progress and Library Closing Dates for Training.
The automation system is scheduled to go online on March 10. The Library will
be closed on March 19 and 20 for training.
4. Discuss Internet Issues.
Mignon has met with the police chief and the City Attorney on procedures to
follow if pornography is viewed in the Library. If an adult is showing a child
pornography, the Library staff will call the police. If a minor is viewing
pornography and this is observed by library staff, the minor will be asked to
leave and give up Internet privileges. The policy clearly states that Internet
users can not violate city ordinance, state law, or federal law. If they violate
laws, their privileges will be revoked.
Mignon announced a tentative schedule for providing Internet access.
Hopefully. equipment will be installed in late April and Internet access will begin
soon after the installation. A firm installation date for the equipment will be
announced by the next meeting date.
5. Discuss Library's Open House for promoting the Automation System and
Public Internet Access.
The Friends of the Library are hosting an Open House on May 7th from 5:00 p.m.
to 7:00 p.m. The Board requested that the time be changed to 6:00 to 8:00.
(The Friends group agreed to do this.) The Friends will have entertainment
which will include the Wylie High School Jazz Ensemble and Bocooz the Clown.
Other entertainment is being scheduled. Invitations will be sent to the Boards
and City Council.
