05-13-2013 (Library) Minutes I/ Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, May 13, 2013- 7:00 pm Conference Room Smith Public Library 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 300 Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Mindy Ayers, Shirley Burnett, Gerri Washington, Margaret (Elaine) Sichter & Rachel Orozco (Board Liaison) Members absent: Candy Arrington, Timothy McCray & William Whitney CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three (3) minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. There were no citizens present at the meeting. PRESENTATION No presentation was made at the meeting. ACTION ITEMS The Library Board Minutes of Monday, April 8, 2013 were approved as presented. The letter from the Board to City Council was reviewed and approved with changes as discussed. Board members that were present signed the letter and it will be left at the Circulation Desk for absent members to sign. The letter will be mailed to Council Members and will also be presented at the June 11 meeting. DISCUSSION ITEMS Library Budget FY14: • Requests were submitted as follows: o Additional library hours, additional staff and additional hours for existing staff. This would allow the library hours to be changed to Monday-Thursday 10:00am-8:00pm and Friday & Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm. o Add a Professional part-time librarian; o Move one of the existing Children's reference assistants from part time to full time. May 13, 2013 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 2 • May 20 - Deadline for the entire budget to be input. • City Council Meetings @ 6:00pm on the following dates regarding FY14 Budget: o May 28 —Budget Overview o July 16 - Department Budget presentations o July 18 - Department Budget presentations o July 30 - Special Budget Session (if needed) o September 10 - Budget Approved • Discussion was held regarding the Patron Code of Conduct section on bringing animals into the library. Policies from other libraries were presented to review as examples. Rachel will put some proposed language together and submit to the City Attorney for review. When that has been completed this will be brought before the Board for final review. STAFF REPORTS New Summer Hours: We will open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting June 10 and ending Friday, August 23 Texas Media Award Presentation, Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. (This was our teen who wrote and directed a Banned Books Week video for the library.) Excellence Award presentation at Tuesday, May 28 Council meeting School Supply Fine Drive through the end of May Computer Classes: Quickbooks: Beginning and Advanced; Small Business: Marketing and Business Plans Upcoming Events: • Comic Book Night: May 16 from 3:30-8:00pm (4th grade and above) • Tosho-Kon @ SPL: May 18 from 9:30am-4:00pm • Summer Reading Club: Reading Logs will be available May 28. First day to submit logs is Monday, June 24. • Summer Reading Club Kick-Off: Friday, June 14, 9:00am to 11:45am. This year the event is in partnership with the Recreation Center. Additional parking will be available at Wylie High School and shuttle busses will be running. The library will open at noon on this day.
