06-09-2014 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, June 9, 2014 — 7:00 pm Conference Room Smith Public Library 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 300 Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Mindy Ayers, Todd Abronowitz, Dorothy Corbin Brand, Shirley Burnett, & Rachel Orozco, Board Liaison Members absent: Kathy Schwarz, Gerri Washington & William Whitney CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three(3)minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. No citizens were present at the meeting. PRESENTATION No presentation was scheduled. ACTION ITEMS The Library Board Special Meeting Minutes of Monday, May 19, 2014 were approved as presented. DISCUSSION ITEMS Outreach Programs: • A suggestion was made and a discussion was held regarding reaching out to the National Honor Society Students at Wylie High School, Wylie East High School & McMillan High School in Murphy. Also to reach out to the Community Service Coordinators at the private schools that service the students in Wylie. Schools such as Bishop Lynch High School, John Paul II High School, Parish Episcopal School, Ursuline Academy, Jesuit High School, The Hockaday School and Greenhill School. All of the students at private schools are required to have community service hours and some of those hours could be spent working in the library reading to small children, shelving books, assisting with Friends book sales, etc. June 9, 2014 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 2 • There are currently 22 teen volunteers for the summer and 32 applications were received. During the school year the number of teen volunteers is reduced to approximately 10 students each semester. They have to apply and if selected they attend an orientation before they start volunteering. • The Friends Scholastic book sale is an example where teen volunteers would be able to be utilized to assist with set up and break down. • It was suggested that a list of schools be prepared and information be sent to the National Honor Society Officers and/or the Community Service Coordinators at the schools along with information on the application process. • A presentation could also be given at one of the Murphy City Council meetings to make them aware of the percentage of their citizens utilizing our facility and all of the programs we have to offer. STAFF REPORTS FY15 Budget Update: • In the past the Finance Department hasn't figured the cost of opening the library additional hours and this year figures were put together. o Staff requested to open additional hours: • All part time staff to increase to 30 hours • Additional full time Reference Assistant in Children's • Part-time Reference Assistant—Adult • Part-time professional Librarian—Children's o One goal is to shorten the amount of time that Supervisor's spend working the public desks so they can work on projects such as long range planning. • July 15 or 17 the library budget will be presented to Council and Board Members are encouraged to attend to show their support. Upcoming Special Events: Summer Reading Club Kick-Off Party: June 13 from 9:00am-11:45pm The Friends are still looking for volunteers to assist with their book sale on Friday June 13 specifically for 12:00pm-3:0Opm and 3:00pm-6:00pm shifts. Steampunk Tea: June 21 @ 1:00pm Come into our steampunk tea parlor and chat with our guest authors. Book signing will follow, and book will be available for purchase. Costumes admired but not required. Part of the book sale proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Library. Registration required. Meet Pete the Cat!
