DISCUSSION ITEMS
Outreach Programs:
• A suggestion was made and a discussion was held regarding reaching out to the National
Honor Society Students at Wylie High School, Wylie East High School & McMillan
High School in Murphy. Also to reach out to the Community Service Coordinators at the
private schools that service the students in Wylie. Schools such as Bishop Lynch High
School, John Paul II High School, Parish Episcopal School, Ursuline Academy, Jesuit
High School, The Hockaday School and Greenhill School. All of the students at private
schools are required to have community service hours and some of those hours could be
spent working in the library reading to small children, shelving books, assisting with
Friends book sales, etc.
June 9, 2014 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 2
• There are currently 22 teen volunteers for the summer and 32 applications were received.
During the school year the number of teen volunteers is reduced to approximately 10
students each semester. They have to apply and if selected they attend an orientation
before they start volunteering.
• The Friends Scholastic book sale is an example where teen volunteers would be able to
be utilized to assist with set up and break down.
• It was suggested that a list of schools be prepared and information be sent to the National
Honor Society Officers and/or the Community Service Coordinators at the schools along
with information on the application process.
• A presentation could also be given at one of the Murphy City Council meetings to make
them aware of the percentage of their citizens utilizing our facility and all of the
programs we have to offer.
