09-08-2014 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, September 8, 2014— 7:00 pm Conference Room Smith Public Library 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 300 Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Mindy Ayers, Todd Abronowitz, Shirley Burnett, Gerry Washington, Kenneth Cash & Rachel Orozco, Board Liaison Members absent: Dorothy Corbin Brand & Sandra Stone CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three(3)minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. No citizens were present at the meeting. PRESENTATION No presentation was given at the meeting. ACTION ITEMS The Library Board Minutes of Monday, August 11, 2014 were approved as presented. DISCUSSION ITEMS There will be a Council meeting tomorrow, September 9, and the budget will be given final approval. Library staff positions were posted last week contingent on the budget being passed by Council. Once the budget has passed the posting will change to indicate the new positions will be effective October 1. We will be adding seven additional part-time staff members that will be hired to cover the additional hours. The new hours can't begin until new staff has been hired and trained which could be late November or early December. Rachel informed the Board she will be out of town for the next meeting on October 13. She inquired as to whether they wanted to still hold the meeting or cancel it. The Board agreed to cancel the October meeting and meet as regularly scheduled on November Y• tog) September 8, 2014 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 2 STAFF REPORTS Summer Reading Club Statistics: Groves Elementary read the most books this summer with 53 and won the Abby award. Last summer Dodd Elementary won the award. Overall participation by city was Wylie, Murphy, Sachse, Lavon, Nevada and Garland. Pre-K—participation slightly decreased 4th & 5th—increased in participation Teens—Attendance increased (288 logs turned in as opposed to 234 last year). Overall program attendance increased. Story time attendance had a slight decrease. Next year we would like to target more participation from the Harrison, Cooper and Burnett schools. These schools didn't have any reading logs submitted unless children didn't indicate their school on the reading log. Upcoming Special Events: Forensic Investigation: September 18 at 6:30PM Learn about real arson crime scene investigation and see equipment up close. Due to the nature of the program it is best suited for tweens to adults. Friends of the Library Meeting: September 18 at 6:00 PM The Friends of the Smith Public Library hold their monthly meetings on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:00 PM in the Conference Room. Talk Like a Pirate Day: September 19 Discover your inner pirate with fun for all ages. Banned Books Week Author Event: September 27 Join us for our annual "celebrating the freedom to read" banned books week author panel and book signing, featuring: Rosemary Clement Moore, Bluebonnet author Polly Holyoke, Kay Honeyman, Karen Harrington and Lindsey Cummings.
