DISCUSSION ITEMS
Long Range Plan Ideas:
Customer Service Survey: We would like to do a survey of our users and non-users. We did
one before we moved into our new building and haven't done one since that time.
Technology: There is a rotation schedule with the Information Support Department and they are
trying to rotate equipment every 4 years. Since most of our inventory was purchased 4 years ago
this will be an expensive endeavor. We currently have the following computer inventory:
• Adult Department: 15 desktops & 2 Wads
March 9, 2015 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 4
• Children's Department: 8 desktops & 3 learning stations
• Teen Room: 12 laptops and 3 Wads
• Computer Lab: 16 desktops
The Teen laptops need to be replaced first. The batteries were replaced in an effort to make the
laptops last longer. We submitted a request for 6 to be replaced in this current fiscal year and
they didn't get approved. We will put our request in again for the next fiscal year budget and
hopefully it will be approved.
We received a grant to replace one of the Early Learning Stations and it will be replaced this
fiscal year.
The desktops in the computer lab have less usage so they will last longer. In FY16 we want to
apply for a grant to replace the desktop computers with laptops. Our goal is to convert the area
to a more flexible space so that the room could be used for a meeting room and/or hold different
types of training classes.
A scanner has been purchased with grant funds and we need to determine where we are going to
set it up in the public area.
We received a grant to purchase some audio/video equipment to be used to do an oral history
project and library promotion.
We would like to purchase some type of proxy server so when our webpage is accessed only one
login and password will be needed. Currently, a separate login and password is needed to access
each database.
We want to integrate our e-books from Overdrive into our library catalog. This process would
cost about $1,000.00.
A grant has been submitted to make the Small Business Resource Center mobile and purchase 3
laptops. We have purchased additional new titles and downloadable audio and want to promote
the resources more. We have offered small business classes in the past and would like to offer
more of them. Our QuickBooks class is very popular among our small business community.
Collection Development: We now have downloadable music and are no longer buying music
CD's. We have also phased out more of our print magazines. Teen magazines have been phased
out because they aren't being utilized by the Teens. We are ordering less of the print magazines
for adults because we now offer some of those online. The magazine collection for adults can
now be checked out. DVD's and books on CD are still very popular.
For FY16 we are reviewing all of our online resources to see which ones are performing and will
drop some of the lower performing ones. Either something different will be purchased or the
funds will be utilized to purchase something else. We did get a static IP address because every
time Verizon changed the IP address we had to notify all of our vendors. We are currently doing
March 9, 2015 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 4
some research into the genealogy section as to what other libraries have and what online
resources are available and what new is coming available online.
Library Space: Our space was built to be flexible as our collection grows and changes. We are
looking at rearranging the shelving in the new book area. In the Children's area we are looking
at converting the periodical shelving into more of a graphic novel section. We have had the
vendor come in and give us some pricing to accomplish these goals. In FY16 we will look into
replacing some missing shelves, damaged book ends and some divider shelves that weren't
purchased initially.
Other services and programs that staff has discussed are offering library service to homebound
residents. A possible partnership with the Senior Center and local churches would give us a
better idea of people who can't leave their homes anymore.
Friends Event at Barnes & Noble: The Friends are holding a Poetry Festival on April 18 from
2:00-4:00pm at Barnes & Noble at Firewheel featuring Sarah Cortez who is an author and a
Houston Police Officer. Alan Birkelbach who is the 2005 Texas Poet Laureate and Ann Howells
who is a Pushcart Prize nominee will also be on hand. The Friends will be holding a book fair in
connection with this event.
STAFF REPORTS
We have hired two additional part-time staff members in the Children's Department. Kellie
Latson was a school librarian in Allen. Anna Simkulet, has a Communications Degree and has
been a stay at home mom and decided she wants to work part-time.
