04-13-2015 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, April 13, 2015 — 7:00 pm Conference Room Smith Public Library 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 300 Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Mindy Ayers, Todd Abronowitz, Shirley Burnett, Gerri Washington & Rachel Orozco, Board Liaison Members absent: Dorothy Corbin Brand, Kenneth Cash & Sandra Stone CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three (3) minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. No citizens were present at the meeting. PRESENTATION No presentation was given at the meeting. ACTION ITEMS The Library Board Minutes of Monday, March 9, 2015 were approved as presented. DISCUSSION ITEMS Long Range Plans: Rachel asked for input on goals to assist staff regarding growing the collection, supporting staff and volunteers and how we might get financial support. Goal 1: Grow the Collection to Meet Increased Demand. • Run reports and analyze what part of the collection needs to be enhanced. • Run reports to see what has high circulation and what has low circulation. • Public survey regarding the collection. • Ongoing weeding of the collection based on circulation reports. • Decide how to allocate budget for different formats. April 13, 2015 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 3 Goal 2: Support Staffing and Volunteers. • Analyze staff for additional hours. • Check on Sunday hours. • Look at volunteer programs for both teens and adults. • Rotate staff to attend conferences each year. • Look at partnerships with local libraries to bring in guest speakers for additional training. Goal 3: Examine Options to Bolster Financial Support. • Murphy City Council presentation • Corporations to fund the library. • Send two to three professional librarians for grant writing workshops. • Campaign to remind council that the library still needs to be funded and it is tied to population growth. Goal 4: Develop and Promote Library Services and Partnerships that Foster Community- Wide Formal and Informal Learning for Users. • Apply for grant and ask Chamber to contribute either money or publicity. 10% community support to enhance the grant. • Rotary Club possible partnership to develop leadership in young people. • Research possibility of Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops working on a project to raise funds for electronics, books and/or makerspace. • Presentation to local HOA's to donate books weeded from our collection for their residents to utilize. Goal 5: Strengthen,Enhance and Promote the Library as a Central Community Meeting Place, Technology Access and Community Life Long Learning Center. • Presentation to local HOA's to donate books weeded from our collection for their residents to utilize. Goal 6: Continue the Focus on Providing Quality Customer Service. • System is set up to send reminder email when items are due. Would be good if this can be expanded to be done by text. • Patrons can choose to print and/or email receipts. • Automatic call or email when books on hold are ready for pickup. • Researching obtaining the ability to email or text event information. Goal 7: Ensure a Stable, Reliable and Sustainable Electronic Platform and Build Strong Staff Expertise to Deliver Cost-Effective,Efficient, Reliable and Responsive Library Services. • Resource sharing of catalog and reciprocal borrowing. • Ensure staff is trained on all equipment and platforms in order to better assist patrons. Kids are encouraged to read the book on their own time and then come to the meeting for discussion and a craft. Sign up at the Children's desk. Participation is limited,but all participants get a free copy of the book. • April: Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney • May: No book club meeting. ROAR Poetry Festival Events: Saturday,April 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Interactive Poetry Workshop Workshop presented by Will Richey, an award-winning Spoken Word artist! Participants may bring two poems for publication in our ROAR booklet. Workshop is free and registration is appreciated. Lunch and open mic (lunch is provided). For grades 4-12 Saturday,April 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Poetry Workshop and Reading Houston poet Sarah Cortez will present a workshop. 2005 Texas Poet Laureate Alan Birkelbach and Pushcart Prize nominee Ann Howells will present a reading of their works. Fairy Gardens: April 18 @ 3:30 PM Learn about this miniature version of gardening limited only by your imagination. Presented by horticulturalist Cynthia Koogler of Flower Child Plants. BeTween Book & Movie Club: Aril 30 from 6:00-7:00 PM Never judge a book by its movie. 4` , 5th and 6th graders are invited to discuss different books that have movie adaptations.
