DISCUSSION ITEMS
The current Board Members introduced themselves and welcomed new Board Members:
Janice Borland was absent due to vacation. Mindy Ayers advised that Janice is a former Science
Teacher and former Librarian at the Austin Academy for Excellence in Garland and just retired in June.
Karen Adams is the proud Mom of Abby the library reading dog. She was an educator and in education
administration in the school system for 24 years and is also retired.
Collection Development Policy:
This policy is the guide that the library staff uses to order and collect materials. Rachel recommended
not approving this Policy until the next meeting to give Board Members more of an opportunity to read
through the document and become more familiar with it.

Rachel added more on the community and the Council of Governments. One interesting statistic Rachel
found was 19% of the population 5 years and older in Wylie speak another language other than English
in their home. Rachel gets yearly information from Wylie ISD as to what languages those are and this
also helps to determine what needs to be added to the collection.
The library received a grant that will allow additional small business type classes to be offered to the
community. Rachel has met with the Wylie Chamber of Commerce about partnering with them to do a
survey to find out what the small business community needs.
A question was brought up in regard to the "Criteria for Selection" and the 18 standards listed. All 18
standards don't apply to every title that is purchased. It was suggested that the list be revised using
bullet points versus numbering.
Request for Reconsideration of Materials Process was discussed and it was determined that Item 3
should be left "as is" and no time limit for response should be added. Patrons must be a current library
card holder in order to contest an item.
Members were again encouraged to review the policy before the next meeting so any final questions can
be answered and the policy can be approved.
