03-10-2008 (Library) Minutes Wylie Library Board CITY OF WYLIE Minutes Smith Public Library Board Monday, March 10, 2008 — 6:00 pm Smith Public Library 800 Thomas Street Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Grace Morrison called the meeting to order. Members Present: Grace Morrison, Eric LeJeune, Lucy Shriver, Shirley Burnett, David James, Junaid Najamuddin, James Griffin, Rachel Orozco Action Items The minutes of the February 11, 2008 meeting were approved with corrections. PRESENTATIONS Jerri Smith presented information about the Friends activities. She announced the following: On Saturday, September 21, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. is the first large book sale at American National Bank. Red Byboth has donated space at his business, Dallas Moving and Storage. The Library will have a member's only preview sale. Grace Morrison suggested talking to the Friends of the Garland Library because they have experience with book sales. The Wylie News donated the space for the Christmas Greeting Card Page. The Friends will have new fees: students and seniors $15.00, individuals $20.00, family $35.00, Business $60.00, Benefactor $100, Lifetime, $300. The Friends will give out bags as a perk for joining the Friends. Jerri said to let Rachel know if Teens want to volunteer. Rachel said that all volunteers must have a criminal background check. Rachel explained that the LSTA grant will be for twelve laptops for the Teen Center. The Library will partner with Wylie Wave. The Library has worked with Wylie Wave for many years. With this grant, they will do two programs in June and July. The laptops — will be used at the Teen Center. Rachel is waiting on the figures from the architect to submit the Hillcrest Grant to fund the Teen Room. Minutes— Wylie_Library_Board Page 1 The Friends will have a planning meeting for the Breakfast with Santa at Ballard Street on Wednesday, March 19 at 8 a.m. Jerri and Rachel have been researching the history of Wylie in the Quiet Room (Bluebonnet). The Library has a copy of Beb Fulkerson's book. Rachel and Jerri also visited with Beb Fulkerson. She gave several items for the Library to copy. Rachel and Jerri will be meeting with a representative about furniture on February 11 and 20 at 2 p.m. in the Bluebonnet Room. Stephanie French of Almost Home will give customers 15 percent off if they bring in a new or gently used book. The Barnes and Noble Book Sale will be on Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13. Present vouchers and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Friends. The Friends Spring Reception will be Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m. The Scholastic Book Sale will be Monday through Saturday, June 9 through 11 during library hours. DISCUSSION ITEMS The Library staff met with the architects to look at the electrical outlets and phone data. The staff also met with the consultants for audiovisual equipment. The architects are coming the week of April 11 to review interiors and millwork. The construction manager is looking at all three buildings to insure that is sound engineering-wise. The brick wall in the Youth Services are has to be there. The interior and exterior are both going to be stone. As a cost savings they have looked at eliminating the stone in some areas of the interior. The Teen Room wall has changed to allow for better site lines. Other suggestions were made but we were told "no". Rachel explained what the wall would look like. The wall takes away square footage. The Library staff has asked that there only be poles; however, structurally that was not possible. The construction manager and talked to Shoemaker and Hardt to look at the café. Rachel also went by Frisco to look at their café. The meeting room needs to be revised so that we can define better our policy in regards to programs. The Library has had requests from religious organizations. Groups can meet for study but not for services. Political campaigning may not be conducted in the Library; however, political forums for information are allowed. The Library has also allowed groups to book the room for the entire year. The Library Board will review the samples from other libraries for the next meeting. Minutes— Wylie_Library_Board Page 2 Reports Rachel and Donna will be at the Public Library Association conference in Minneapolis the week of March 24. The Texas Library Association Conference is Wednesday, April 16 through April 18 at the Dallas Convention Center. The newsletter and programs are available online.
