The Library staff will tour Arlington Public Library to review their RFID project.
Shawn Brumley from 3M will be asked to attend either April or May for a
demonstration. David James, Library Board member, will attend the tour.
Rachel announced that the Council Meeting on Tuesday, March 13 regarding the
long range financial plans for the City. On March 27, the architects will give the
cost for the building project.
Rachel handed out the staff projections. These are preliminary and Rodney will
give a better assessment. The schematic design was passed out as well as changes
that the staff had made. Rachel explained that Librarians require an MLS.
Reference Assistants require a Bachelor's Degree. The B.A. depends on the
specialty that the Library needs. Library Technicians require a GED or High
School Diploma. Pages/Clerks/Shelvers may require that the person be 16 or
older, depending on Human Resources. Rachel would like to have the Public
Services Librarian and the Children's Librarian as supervisors. The Library will
have a Young Adult services area. One of the Library Technicians will move to
Technical Services. Customer service is important and this is accomplished with
adequate staffing.
Staff clocked how much time they spent doing each of their tasks. For example,
Cheryl spends almost half her time shelving when she should be at the circulation
desk. Dia spends half her time shelving even though she has training in Child
Development rather than using her skill for other projects. A shelver would help
in this case. Staffing will be a challenge for funding all the new projects. Rodney
will give the Library a report.
Rachel passed out the information about Library programs. Shakespeare Man
will be good for all ages. The Tween Writer's workshop only has five slots left.
Rachel showed the exercise that the staff does when they look at the schematic
design. Architects are then e-mailed with the suggested changes. Every area and
floor of the Library is examined for function. The staff marked up the schematic
design and then mailed it to the architect.
The Library Staff is concerned about the 7,000 square foot mezzanine and its
ability to house computers and materials for ten years. The Library Board
indicated that they want a restroom on the mezzanine. Staff will have to leave the
mezzanine to go to the restroom, leaving the floor unattended. There is not a
requirement for a restroom on every floor. It would be for convenience. The
Library staff wants the Young Adult area glass-enclosed so that staff can have
visual site.
Rachel has asked the architect to do a cost for one floor; one floor with
mezzanine; and the possibility of expanding the mezzanine to a full two-floor
building.
