04-09-2007 (Library) Minutes MINUTES Library Advisory Board Monday, April 9, 2007 Smith Public Library 800 Thomas Street 7:00 p.m. Grace Morrison called the meeting to order. Members present: Grace Morrison, Shirley Burnett, David James, Lucy Shriver, Rachel Orozco Members Absent: Joe Murphy, Sandra Williams, Junaid Najamuddin Citizens Present: Jim Griffin, Belinda Hockett t'. . Jim Griffin expressed his support of the Library. Minutes were approved for the March 12, 2007. DIN ' . The Library staff and David James toured the Arlington Public Library for RFID. David reported that the tour was interesting. He commented on the knowledge of the staff in Arlington. David described how RFID works. David described it as a brilliant way of doing business this way. The obvious benefit is staff savings. David said that we really must get it for the Library. David described the check- in process. RFID allows staff to check-in books a stack of books at a time. Right now, it takes the Library all day to check in items, with two people working. Rachel explained the Pharos and Envisionware systems. Pharos is a queuing system and Envisionware is a reservation system. The Library selected Envisionware because it interfaced well with TLC, the integrated Library System. Rachel said that their will be a Long-Range Financial Planning workshop after the Council meeting, Tuesday, April 0, 2007. Grace Morrison received responses from some of the Council members and shared them with the Board. Jerry Hoagland went to Ruben Delgado, County Engineer to ask about the progress on FM 1378. Construction is anticipated to begin at the same time as the new buildings. The project will be 15 to 24 months. The Library Board discussed the timetable for the new buildings. The Library Board prefers that the Library be built in December 2007 or early 2008. Wylie citizen Belinda Hockett asked how she could become involved. It was suggested that she attend the Council work sessions, Library Board and Friends meetings. Ms. Hockett asked how an individual could get money for the Library. Rachel suggested that citizens attend the Friends meeting to present ideas. Funding activities go through the Friends. Rachel reported that the Library Survey was going well. The Library received a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant and the Texas Book Festival Grant for materials for English-as-a-Second Language. A Hillcrest Foundation Grant has been submitted for $102,000 for furniture and books for the Children's area. The Barnes and Noble event is Saturday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Library Board members were encouraged to attend the Wylie Idol. The Library will have art work displayed from several schools. The Library will host a Young Artist Reception. The Library will also have Family Fun Night for National Library Week.
