05-14-2007 (Library) Minutes MINUTES Library Advisory Board Monday, May 14, 2007 Smith Public Library 800 Thomas Street 7:00 p.m. Grace Morrison called the meeting to order. Members present: Grace Morrison, Shirley Burnett, David James, Lucy Shriver, Junaid Najamuddin, Joe Murphy Rachel Orozco Members Absent: Sandra Williams Citizens Present: Jim Griffin s4 4 k pAR ATION Jim Griffin expressed his support of the Library. He also commented on the success of the Barnes and Noble event. He also said that he hopes the Library will continue to promote the library project. ITEMS Minutes were approved for the April 9, 2007. 54:1 ; ATION a frjaiS Rachel Orozco, Library Director, said that Mindy Manson is meeting with Craig Melde of Architexas. She said that Mindy Manson is checking into adding the book and RFID funds into the bond project. Grace Morrison said that the road construction will not halt the beginning of the building project. She said that Mayor and Council directed the architects to pursue building all three facilities at the same time. Ms. Morrison stressed staying positive with the project. Rachel Orozco, Library Director, sent the internet policy so that Library Board members may read it and begin to think about changes. The goal is to change it from eight pages to one page front and back. The Library staff goal is to have the policy on the computers. It has been requested by Mayor and Council that the Library Board discussed the naming of the new Library. The Library Board agreed unanimously that the Library name stay the same. It was suggested that a plaque be placed in the current Library and the new Library detailing the history of the Library. STAFF REMITS - - Summer Reading Club process is similar to last year. The Baby Reading Club is a new component. The Scholastic Book Sale is Monday, June 11 through Wednesday, June 13 in the Bluebonnet Room. The Library Director encouraged board members to come by and spend money and volunteer. All this information will be posted on the website. The Teen Center started in May because of problems with the neighborhood teens. The teens come after school and do not have a place to go. Cristen initiated a Teen Center in the Bluebonnet Room from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. We had an average of 25 teens daily. Lucy Shriver said that the teens were interested in the TLC and had calmed down a whole lot since the Teen Center started. She also expressed concern about the children in the immediate neighborhood and their inability to travel to the new Library.
