03-20-2001 (Library) Minutes RITA & TRUETT SMITH LIBRARY BOARD
BOARD MEETING
The Library Board of the city of Wylie met in regular session on March 20, 2001
at City Hall at 7:00 p.m. The attendees were:
Grace Morrison
Shirley Burnett
Adrian Sanchez
Liz Allen
Dan Hendrix
1. Approval of the Minutes.
Minutes were approved as read from the February 12, 2001, meeting.
2. Discuss Monthly Report
The Library broke a record for February circulation with over 8,000 checkouts.
Other statistics are increasing too.
Dan asked a question about new patron registrations. The Library has
registered 640 patrons in the first five months of FY 2001 compared to 601
during the same time period last year. , (6% increase), but it is still minimal
compared to the increase in reference questions, circulation, and Internet
usage. Mignon commented that we should exceed 8,000 checkouts for the
third month in a row. All three months are record breakers.
Board members commented they liked the graphs.
Adrian asked about the automation system. Mignon explained that the
automation system we currently have would eventually become obsolete.
That is why it was important to attend the conference in Salt Lake City. The
software that the system is built on is old and will be hard to support after a
few years. Mignon has gotten a quote from Dynix to inquire about cost for
migrating to the new software, Horizon. It was very high. She was advised to
explore other options. This is not a critical issue at this time, but it will become
more critical within the next two or three years.
3. Discuss Spring and Summer Programs.
The Celebrate the Wylie Arts programs have been very good, but the
attendance has been low because of soccer. There is another program
scheduled for March 27. David Eden will be doing a program on cartooning.
The first week in April is National Library Week. On April 3 the Library will
host Ramblin Rose and on April 4 Grace will be doing a puppet program. The
Read Aloud program will be on April 5 from 6:30 to 8:30.
4. Discuss Library Related Legislation
At this time, the direct aid is still in consideration in the legislature. Mignon will
get an update at TLA next week.
There is pending state and federal legislation for filtering issues. The federal
law has been passed. Lawmakers are writing guidelines and libraries will
have a year or so to comply after the guidelines are released. There is state
legislation pending at this time that will make filtering mandatory. More
information will be provided, as it is available.
NEW BUSINESS
Mignon announced she would be out of the office March 28 through 30 attending Texas
