04-09-2001 (Library) Minutes RITA & TRUETT SMITH LIBRARY BOARD
BOARD MEETING
The Library Board of the city of Wylie met in regular session on April 9, 2001
at the Library. The attendees were:
Grace Morrison
Adrian Sanchez
Liz Allen
Dan Hendrix
1. Approval of the Minutes.
Minutes were approved as read from the March 20, 2001, meeting.
2. Discuss Monthly Report and Quarterly Report.
The Library hit 10,000 checkouts for the first time its history. The Board congratulated
the staff on a job well done. The Friends of the Library treated the staff to a breakfast
last Friday to celebrate. Statistics were submitted to the Wylie News
The Board liked the graphs that Mignon did to illustrate the statistical increases. Liz
asked about the number of magazines the library has and what we are spending on
magazines. We are spending about $2000 on magazines and they are used more in-
house than they are for checkout. The primary usage is for current events.
Grace asked about the status of filtering. The American Library Association has filed
a suit against the law that is supposed to make public libraries filter. The guidelines
that have been released state that libraries must begin filtering by October 2001 to
be in compliance with the law. Mignon stated that she will need to plan for filtering
software for budgetary purposes for FY 2002. There is a good possibility this law will
be tied up in the courts for months, but it is better to have funds available to install
filtering software if necessary. Mignon will research prices and present some
budgetary figures to the Board next month and keep them updated on the status of
the ALA suit.
The law states that libraries must comply with this law to receive federal funding.
NETLS receives a small portion of federal funding which means Wylie has to comply
with the law. In addition, the Library is receiving ERATE funding which is federal.
3. Discuss National Library Week events.
On Tuesday evening the Library hosted Mike the Magician who filled in for Ramblin
Rose. At the end of the program, a representative from Phil Graham's office
presented the Library with a certificate of appreciation and a letter. A copy of the
letter was sent to the Wylie News and City Council. Approximately 20 people attended
the program. On Wednesday, Grace Morrison presented a puppet program and 43
people attended the program. On Thursday, the Library hosted the Read Aloud and
30 people attended the program.
4. Discuss Library Survey.
The Library statistics have increased significantly over the last few months. It is a
logical assumption that the growth of Wylie is a contributing factor, but the staff would
like more concrete information so we can continue to increase statistics. Mignon
wrote a survey that will be distributed to patrons. The survey deadline is May 18.
Mignon plans to use the statistical results for budgeting purposes. The results will be
presented to the Library Board at the June meeting.
