o Review of the 2016 Thoroughfare CIP Public Art Projects artist rankings by the
2016 Thoroughfare CIP Public Art Selection Committee and their
recommendations for the finalist of Site #1, Site #2, and Site #3. (C. Ehrlich,
Board Liaison)
Staff Comments
Public Arts Liaison Ehrlich addressed the board stating that the selection committee narrowed the artists
for Site #1 and #2, by unanimous vote to four semi-finalists. These included Mike Szabo, Tom Latka
Studios, Jim Gallucci, and Michael Clapper. All semi-final artists attended a Public Input Meeting on July
27, 2016 to gather information on the City and hear public comments regarding the art. These artists
prepared presentations to be given to the Selection Committee tonight during the previous meeting. All
PAAB members attended the presentations and discussion by the Selection Committee.
Ehrlich explained the committee ranked the artists as first choice, Mike Szabo, second choice Latka
Studios, third choice Michael Clapper, and fourth choice Jim Gullacci. The first choice finalist was
recommended to the Public Arts Advisory Board as the final artist to commission the art. The PAAB, at
their discretion, may change the order of finalist or choose to take the recommendation made by the
selection committee.

Thoroughfare CIP Public Art Projects, Site#1 and Site#2. (C. Ehrlich, Board Liaison)
Staff/Committee Discussion
Ehrlich asked if there were any questions or comments regarding the presentations. All board members
gave positive comments regarding the selection of Michael Szabo as the recommended final artist.
Brooke Lopez noted, in the rankings, she believed Latka Studios should be moved from 2nd ranked to
last. A couple of members requested that the order of Clapper and Gallucci be reversed. Board Liaison
Ehrlich explained that the motion before the board was for the recommended final artist for Site #1 and
#2 and that the order of the other artists could be discussed if the recommended artist could not fulfill
the commission. Board members asked that in the event Michael Szabo could not provide the
commission that the board be notified to review the other artists. Ehrlich agreed to bring the item back
to the board, should that happen.
Committee members asked if staff would contact Michael Szabo and ask if the artist could increase the
height of the'sculptures and increase the lighting within his budget. Also mentioned was to add some
type of artistic design relating to the two sites to the mile markers to give encouragement to continue to
walk to the other side of the trails to view the other design.
Committee Action
A motion was made by board member Jones, seconded by Board member Green to rank Michael
Szabo first, and to recommend Michael Szabo as the final artist to the Wylie City Council to commission
art for Sites 1 and 2; and authorize staff to prepare a contract to commission the art. A vote was taken
and the motion passed 7-0.
