09-11-2017 (Library) Minutes Library Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Library Board--Minutes Monday, September 11, 2017 —7:00pm Conference Room Smith Public Library 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 300 Wylie, Texas 75098 CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Members present: Mindy Ayers,Juan M. Azcarate III, Janice Borland, Shirley Burnett, Kenneth Cash, Rosalynn Davis,Jesse Meason, &Rachel Orozco,Board Liaison Members absent: All Members Present CITIZENS COMMENTS ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS Residents may address Board regarding an item that is not listed on the Agenda. Residents must provide their name and address. Board requests that comments be limited to three(3)minutes. In addition, the Board is not allowed to converse, deliberate or take action on any matter presented during citizen participation. No citizens were present at the meeting. PRESENTATION No presentation was given at the meeting. ACTION ITEMS The Library Board Minutes of Monday,June 12, 2017 were approved as presented. BUSINESS ITEMS Members were introduced to two new board members: Juan M. Azcarate III and Rosalynn Davis. DISCUSSION ITEMS Library Budget Review, FY 18: Members reviewed and discussed the proposed library budget. If approved by Council, this year's budget will be 1.9 million (up slightly last year from 1.7 million). Personnel expenses have been increased by 3%. The library will be open on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8pm. A third full-time circulation position will be added, and the remaining current part-time positions will gain 2-3 work hours per week. The increase will also cover needed computer software. The software program, Novelist has been acquired and EZproxy has been added for the library databases. County Budget Review, FY 18: Members discussed the budget proposal that was presented to the County for FY 18. The library requested $85,000 in funds (same as received last year). The County has September 11,2017 Library Advisory Board Regular Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 3 decided to provide a tax break this year, which will mean library funding cuts. If County budget is approved,the library will receive approximately$3,900 in funds this year. Summer Reading Club Review: Summer Reading Club results were discussed. Overall, participation was up this year. STAFF REPORTS Upcoming Programs and Special Events: Children: My Very Own Book Club: For 1st and 2"d graders 3:30-4:30pm in the Multi-Purpose Room Come read the book together, talk about the story and illustrations, do a craft and enjoy a snack. In person registration at the Children's Desk required and begins 8/14/17.Registration is limited. September 13 or 15:A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon LEGO League: For 1st-4th Graders 3:30-4:30pm in the Storytime Room Come test your imagination and building skills each month by building around a different theme.Team work is encouraged! September 6 or 20: Superpowers Voyagers: Third Grade Learning Club 3:30-4:30pm in the Multi-Purpose Room Third graders are invited to join us for a different adventure and theme each month.The focus of this club is hands on learning and a different challenge is handed out each month. In person registration at the Children's Desk required and begins 8/14/17.Registration is limited September 21: Slimefest! Get gooey with us as we make our own slime. Between Book and Movie Club For 4th-6th graders 6:00-7:00pm in the Storytime Room Never judge a book by the movie! Come enjoy a discussion, watch scenes from the movie, read passages from the book and enjoy some snacks. In person registration at the Children's Desk required and begins 8/14/17.The first 50 kids to sign up get a free copy of the current month's book.Registration is limited. September 28:Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson Teen: Japanimation Club: For 6th-12th graders only Come share your love of all things manga and anime at this club just for teens. Meetings are the 2°d Thursday of the month September through April from 6:00-7:00pm in the Multi- Purpose Room.No registration necessary. Teen Book Club: Sign-ups begin August 14th! October 5: Code of Honor by Alan Gratz All Ages: Comic Book Night Out Tuesday,September 19 from 5:00-7:00pm Pick up a free comic, meet comic artists and more! All Ages Adult: Read More Challenge 2017 Read or listen to one book from each of the 20 categories and record their titles on the log.Titles may not be used for more than one category. Logs may be turned in starting October 2, 2017. Return completed log by December 30, 2017. Successful challengers will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Shirts will be ready to pick up in early 2018. Genealogy Boot Camp Saturday,September 30 from 10:00am-1:00pm Discover resources and tips to help research your family history.The day includes a special presentation on preserving historic Stonehaven and Stone family history. Friends Programs: . Painting with a Twist Fundraiser Tuesday,October 3rd from 7:00-9:30pm Come out to support the Friends of the Smith Library. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to benefit the programs of the Friends of the Library organization.The cost of this event is $35.00 per person. Friends Meeting: Monday, September 18 at 6:00pm Kroger: Register your Kroger card in the Community Rewards program and Friends will earn money every time you shop with no additional cost to you!
