ROBERT BARNUM
ROBERT L BARNUM RL BARNUM STUDIOS
As an experienced public artist with public art successfully installed in eight different states throughout
the US I offer the Wylie Animal Shelter public art project the opportunity to present a large scale
exterior sculpture environment that visually presents a compelling multiple figure sculptural statement
dedicated to the rescue power of adoption and the powerful bond between humans and the pets that
become such an integral part of their lives. As technical reference and as you will note I have worked
decades at evolving public art that celebrates the human agenda and presents the personal story,
narrative or personal content in creative visual terms. My exterior public sculptures are carefully
engineered to be safe, to last for centuries and will require minimum maintenance. I create or design
personal content or the personal story in two sculptural forms. The first form of content is in and with
the character and implied movement of the figure, animal forms, land, and symbolic sculptural forms
that stand as personal signature in my public art.The second form of content or story I create is unique
and seems ideal by design for a sculpture dedicated to animal care/rescue and the powerful relation we
have with our pets. This second form of personal content or personal narrative is in the sculptural form
of the cut word or cut image. Names, Dates, Historical content or historical symbols, educational
content, ethnic character or inspirational comment all stand as visual content possibilities. In essence
you not only view my freestanding sculptures but you also read them like organic pages in a landscape,
animal form or figure shaped sculptural book. All my public art is designed and engineered to be wind,
sun and weather resistant. I exclusively work in extremely durable 6000 series aluminum or Corten
Steel. Both metals will last for centuries and require almost zero maintenance. The exterior sculpture I
am proposing will have no paint that will fade and crumble under harsh Texas weather or year round
sunlight. When illuminated with quality commercial lights or from direct sunlight the 6000 series
aluminum sculptures and the Corten steel marriage will present an elegant almost jewel like visual
appearance that can be viewed at a considerable distance. All my public art is created under my hand in
my well tooled sculpture and mural studios in Michigan. I design public art that is efficient to install My
goal as an experience public artist would be to create a compelling, thought provoking exterior multi
figure/multiple animal form multi content sculpture presence at 20' or taller that inspires a personal
response and a personal interpretation. As you will note from my image references I recently created
and installed a sculpture titled the Sound of The Wind dedicated to the sight impaired. In that sculpture
you will note my inspirational cut word content and my sculptural seeing eye dog.As further reference, I
am currently working on a multiple figure sculpture dedicated to the ARC program in Big Rapids,
Michigan. This current sculpture titled the ARC Pet Walk will include a dog and a cat. I work well with
selection committees, city engineers and other vested groups or individuals with accurate scaled
concept drawings. These accurate scaled concept drawings serve as my communication tool to design
that personal statement agenda my public art is known for.
Please also note that my Fire Fighter EMT Monument and my freedom Is Not free Memorial have
received Congressional Recognition.

JEFFIE BREWER
Animal Shelter Public Art Project Entry Wylie
Dear Selection Committee,
Please accept this document as my formal letter of interest in submitting a proposal for your upcoming
Animal Shelter Public Art Project Entry call for sculpture. I am very excited for you and proud of what
you are doing for art and your community. As a professor of art my passion is in education and as an
artist my passion is in sculpture. I feel that public art envelopes both of my passions in that public art has
the ability to teach and be a viable and important form of artwork.
Over the past eight years my artwork has taken a BIG turn. What started as a favor for a director of our
arboretum has changed the way I make, view, engage in and even think about art. Who knew that
producing a twelve-foot-tall Bunny would spark such a change. Public art has become my passion for a
multitude of reasons: it's accessibility — it brings people who may avoid the museums and galleries into
the fold. By placing it in the public realm, passersby are exposed to artwork they may not otherwise ever
see - live and in person. They determine if they want to keep walking, stop, engage or even take a selfie.
They decide what they think about it and if they are going to share it with others. In doing this you can
educate people and maybe even convert them into art lovers.
As an advocate of public art, I cofounded a biennial sculpture show with my friend the arboretum
director, not as an artist but as a fund raiser, tour guide, installation specialist, juror — you name it and
I'm there to assist. In this capacity, I have seen firsthand the excitement people have as they interact
with the art, the enthusiasm our entire community has for the project and the joy the artists have as
they share their work.
These are just some of the things I see at work with the Animal Shelter Public Art Project Entry.
Introducing new public art to an existing space can truly invigorate and bring a community together and
that prospect is super exciting to me. I feel that my approach to art and style of sculpture would fit well
in the area. This specific site would look great with a splash of color or shiny sculpture mixed with a dash
of whimsy-enhancing but not overpowering the site.
As I hope you can see from my samples, I strive to create art for everyone. It is very important to me
that my art is accessible on some level/in some way by every viewer — across all generations, education
levels, aesthetic preferences, economic and cultural backgrounds. My intention is to provide just enough
information, allowing for a narrative without delving into total non-representationalism. Leaving room
for interpretation as well as a little mystery, I hope, adds to the viewing experience. My work in graphic
design and general fascination with pop culture are heavy influences on my work. The proposed site
itself(when already chosen) is always a wonderful inspiration and I look forward to talking to the
committee members and working together to develop the best work to fit the space.
My work in welded steel is easily maintained, very durable and sometimes quite colorful, working well
within a variety of environments and overcoming many expected concerns including climate issues and
vandalism. Having artwork all over the US and Canada, I can say this medium and approach just works
great for public art! The site would especially lend itself to my abstracted animal forms. I believe a well-
placed animal would bring the space alive and enhance the area.
The proposal I am considering would consist of one to two animal figures, eight to ten feet tall. The
figures would be mounted to the ground using bolts — hidden underground or directly to concrete. It
would be my intent to work with the existing landscape — bringing in natural stone or plants to
enhance, if needed. I would love the chance to work with the committee in picking out the animals for
the proposal —something exciting that would be of special significance to the community.
Should you have questions or require further information, I will be happy to speak with you at your
convenience Thank you for your consideration.

JAMES N. BURNES
To whom it may concern,
This project is of special interest to me because it fits well with my work. My modern yet timeless
renderings of animals would pay homage to the adoption center. The abstract yet lifelike forms in my
sculpture invite contemplation as well as inspire a new way of looking at the forms. People are often
drawn closer to inspect the unique construction. They are modern renderings that revel a layering of
found and fabricated materials, shapes and negative space that form a natural and lifelike homage to
the animals they portray. This interplay of new and old, of positive and negative space, of modern yet
rusty materials will help create an iconic sculpture that will invite passers by into the animal shelter.

Michael Stutz was born and raised in Chattanooga and holds a fine arts degree from the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville. During a three-year period working as a Mardi Gras
parade-float builder in New Orleans, he found a new direction for his art, influenced by the
public nature of the floats and their emphasis on scale. Michael is now based in Southern
California, where he continues to create private and public commissions throughout the U.S.
and internationally. His sculptures are intended to be a part of the everyday lives of people and
their communities, instilling inspiring moments through their iconic, joyful, and heroic presence.

Working at the confluence of public art and landscape architecture, James Dinh draws on the
cultural landscape unique to each site so as to develop design narratives that heighten the
experience and understanding of place. The themes addressed in his creative work are rooted
in his family's experience of being refugees, who had to create a new home here in the U.S.
after leaving Vietnam in 1975. As a result of this personal and collective experience of
displacement, he explores ideas about history, community, and place. He brings to all his
projects cultural sensitivity, an understanding ecology, site analysis, creative placemaking, and
experience with working collaboratively with community and stakeholder groups.

DON KENNELL
My work is about the relationship that humans have with animals. Pivotal species that resonate with the
public have motivated my monumental sculptures in the last five years. People value nature and they
like to see their values reflected in the art around them. The relationship that humans have with animals
is profound. My designs directly speak to the symbiotic nature of that relationship. By making sculptures
that provide shade and seating to humans in the form of giant animals,we symbolize the reciprocity of
the relationship between humans and our pets. My sculptures are like totems that mark space and
proclaim an allegiance with the natural world.
We use scale to create that moment of wonder and awe where a viewer is invited to engage with the
sculpture in front of them.We focus on color, pose, and gesture, the visual mechanics, to draw the
viewer in,to create a moment of beauty, of ease and elegance, a lifelike thing, a living presence. Gesture
is crucial to this process. It is my skill as a figurative sculptor to render gesture with care. My life long
project has been to develop this ability at a large scale that reads in an instant. In that moment, I want
my work to connect with the viewer and elicit an emotional response. Achieving the precise line, the
living pose, the dynamic gesture is key.
Materials mean a lot to me. I have achieved mastery with a variety of metals (steel, corten, copper,
aluminum) both welding and casting. Some works incorporate glass, stone or cement elements. Moving
materials into unlikely configurations is one of my favorite challenges as an artist. This virtuosity is a way
to demonstrate the importance of an idea, a way for me to be worthy of the subject matter. I like to
surprise the viewer so that the question of materials becomes part of the conversation—what is that
made of(I hope they wonder)? Can metal, a very hard and unforgiving material, become this fluid and
alive?
We have many years experience designing and delivering public art on the scale you require. For the
past five years, I have made sculpture for Goldenvoice, producer of the largest music festivals in the
world such as Coachella and Stagecoach. Each year, I create iconic sculptures that are delivered on time
and on budget. They adhere to rigorous engineering standards to withstand their highly interactive
nature, serving tens of thousands of people on a daily basis. In 2015, I incorporated DKLA Design with
my business partner, Lisa Adler, a social scientist who brings over 20 years experience in education and
grassroots community engagement. We are equipped to engage with all stakeholders throughout the
design and installation process and we view this practice as key to the success of public art.
With our clients, we approach our work collaboratively. For example, with the art directors at Coachella,
we developed a long-term theme of using desert animals. We worked again last year with the
Philadelphia Zoo to help them reach their educational goals by designing a sculpture that includes
exploration, discovery and play. We currently sit on a design team with architects, engineers, landscape
and lighting designers for a new public building in a Denver suburb. We will coordinate with state
highway officials, foundation subcontractors and the building crew on site to plan, place and install our
monumental sculptures there this winter. We routinely install sculptures around the nation.
Our designs draw people in, to develop a relationship that connects the viewer to the place and the art
becomes a part of a person's experience. This synergy between the location, the artwork and viewer is
significant. It is the goal of public art: to bring art into peoples' lives. We make public art because we
want to bring joy to peoples' lives and to materialize beauty in the world.
Thank you for your consideration,

WINDY KLEMPERER
LETTER OF INTEREST WYLIE TX
The imagery that pervades my work reflects a lifelong fascination with animals. To make the large scale
sculptures I search scrap yards for industrial refuse ravaged by usage and demolition. Bent and twisted,
such pieces contain energy and potential new life. My welding process is a kind of three dimensional
gesture drawing. With a network of steel lines I build skeletal forms containing both presence and
absence. I investigate the body language of animals to express a feeling or state of being, with motion
conveying emotion. Focusing on the animal realm- probing the relationship between all forms of life on
earth -seems no less important to me than the human aspect alone.
Most of my work, as can be seen from the images submitted, is inspired by wild animals. I do have
however, a deep love for domestic animals as well. I have ridden horses since I was 5 years old,and still
do when I am in New Hampshire June-October. A neighboring friend has a stable and I help exercise her
horses daily. Over the years I have developed many friendships with veterinarians, and often they have
collected my work, or accepted artwork in exchange for services to my pets.
All the dogs and cats all in my life have come either from shelters, or more often, directly from the
streets. I moved to Brooklyn in 1980 to go to Pratt Institute. I lived near the Williamsburg waterfront.
What is now a super trendy, beyond gentrified neighborhood was once a no man's land of abandoned
industrial lofts and lots, empty land leading to broken down piers sinking into the water. Packs of feral
dogs roamed the streets, and at times were threatening if one was alone.
I lived in a big loft with 5 roommates. Over the next few years each and every one of us, and many of
our friends, took in dogs from the streets and they became our loyal companions. Frieda, Wiley Ted,
Hazel,Julio, Billie, Boyfriend, Negrita, Spike, Whiskey, Nugget,Judge, Bean, and many more .. all found
forever homes with us.
I rescued many cats as well. One day I was driving to the subway to do to my waitressing job at the time
I heard meowing, but strangely it didn't subside and I realized somehow the cat was travelling with me. I
pulled over, looked under the hood, and saw two green eyes peering out at me. Somehow, seeking
shelter by the engine, the cat had not gotten mangled by the fan. She climbed readily into my arms and
was my beloved pet, Miss K, for the next 15 years
Another day I was walking my dogs in the abandoned lot next to my loft. They discovered something in a
pile of rubble on the other side of a chain link fence. I called them off, and knelt by the fence. I made
coaxing noises. Suddenly a tiny kitten squirmed out of the rubble, through the chain links into my arms.
It was swiftly followed by four more, only a month or so old. I fostered them at my house until I found
homes for all of them with the help of BARC, a local animal shelter. When I moved to a new
neighborhood in Bushwick Brooklyn I rented the lot next to the building as a way to work on my large
scale sculptures outdoors.Stray cats came and went. There was a young female I hoped to tame. She
became pregnant, and I put an insulated cooler on its side with blankets inside, and food next to my
door. She became accustomed to it, and had her kittens there. Only one survived, but she had finally
become tame enough that I could coax her and her daughter inside. Sasquatch and Fatima were a
wonderful loving pair for many years.
After the passing of my two dogs Wiley and Ted at 15 and 16 years old waited a few years to be ready
for another. When I finally started looking, there were no more stray dogs in Brooklyn! Times had
changed, gourmet pet stores were everywhere, dog runs abounded, and the whole attitude toward pet
care and responsibility had changed. It was an incredible and wonderful improvement. But I could not
find a dog! I started going to shelters, but none quite spoke to me.Then one freezing cold Friday night in
late January my friend Jody called me. "I have your dog", she said. Intrigued, I drove to her apartment,
which was in the only house on an industrial street by the water, a remnant of the old Williamsburg.
Opening the door to her little place, I saw a giant, superbly handsome German Shepherd sitting quietly
by her table. I was amazed she had had the courage to bring him in; she was fearful of dogs ever since
she'd been bitten trying to break up a fight between strays we had taken in years ago. But this fellow
was so sweet and gentle she trusted him. She had looked out the window and seen a black SUV drive
off, and this dog was left tied by rope with no collar to a stop sign on her corner, on this most desolate
street on a freezing cold night.
It turned out he was micro-chipped, which I traced to a kennel in Missouri; he was born in 2004, but
whoever bought him had never registered the chip. What happened next is anyone's guess. He may
have been stolen.Or perhaps he failed guard dog school. Super well trained, he was rather timid and ran
away from thrown balls, children, fireplaces, and sudden movements. He suffered innumerable
problems typical of shepherds and became an extremely expensive dog: he had operations on both his
elbows, had allergies, sensitive digestion, dysplasia, arthritis, and spinal myelopathy. Nonetheless Omar
was my best friend for the next 8 years. He couldn't run much, but he accompanied me for most of my
sculpture installations across the United States over the next 8 years, riding shotgun in my pickup truck,
and sitting quietly nearby while my welder-generator roared, tractors rumbled, and cranes lifted my
sculptures into place.
Last April, at 13, when he was incontinent and could not walk at all, but still weighed 90 Ibs, I finally let
him go, having a vet come to my house to put him top sleep while I held and comforted him.
In all my adventures with stray animals in Brooklyn, most important of all has been my relationship with
a wonderful shelter opened by friends of mine in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1987. I brought them many,
many animals over the years. BARC, Brooklyn Animal Rescue Coalition was a (back then rare) no-kill
shelter; in their 30 odd years in operation they have been responsible for the rescue of thousands of
dogs and cats, and even some wild animals.
I would therefor be honored to have the opportunity to make a permanent sculpture for the City of
Wylie Animal Shelter.

8. Montana Bison, 2017, salvaged steel, 144 X 144 X 80 on boulders 60 X
120 X 60". Great Falls Montana Airport. The commission specifically
requested imagery of a Bison and a Grizzly Bear. They had two locations
already designated where the sculptures would go. As described in the RFP
Great Falls, MT is famous for halting the Lewis and Clark expedition for
many months, until a with great effort they could portage across the series of
waterfalls of the Missouri River. During their time camping on the banks of
the falls the explorers frequently encountered grizzly bears, a new and
fearsome species for them. Sometimes buffalo were swept away by the river,
carcasses accumulated, and grizzlies gathered to feed.
The RFP referenced an anecdote when Lewis was hunting a buffalo, had just
shot it, and was suddenly threatened by a grizzly bear.
I chose to portray the Bison in a moment of action, startled and perhaps
charging (not so much a victim), and to have the Bear appearing to just
notice the action from a distance. Because the sites were very flat, rather
bland triangles, traffic medians, I purchased 30 tons of local river boulders
and had the airport maintenance staff install them to add interest to the
landscape, and elevate the sculptures in a natural way. $40,000

12. Predatory Cat, 2001, salvaged steel, marine epoxy and fiberglass, 42 X

prowl. Marine epoxy and fiberglass mixture applied to the surface heightens
visibility, while enhancing the bone and muscle-like quality of the forms.
Exhibited in numerous exhibitions, this piece is usually displayed wit one or
two deer sculptures nearby, creating the dynamic of predator and prey.
13. Osprey Landing, 2013, salvaged steel, pylon, 26 X 8 X 8 ft I made the
Osprey sculpture for a exhibition on the subject of birds at Maine Audubon
in Falmouth Maine that included 50 artists. The piece was purchased by the
Maine DOT for permanent exhibit along the new Martin's Point Bridge
between Falmouth and Portland. I salvaged truckloads of rebar from
demolition of the old bridge, and built a giant nest for the bird to land on.
The piece was installed atop a 20' piling. $16,000 Contact: June LaCombe

To the Public Art Advisory Board of the City of Wylie:
I am excited about the chance to create a memorable icon and I feel confident I could bring this venture
to completion. I would like the opportunity to create a sculpture with simple clean lines and a light-
hearted sense of compassion. It would be eye catching, easy to describe and would unequivocally relate
to the shelter.
I believe the flat and open space of the location calls for a sculpture of substantial size (about 25 feet) to
occupy that space, yet it should remain uncomplicated. Most importantly the sculpture should capture
the spirit of the shelter by bringing a smile to the viewer.
My partner James Bauer, a welding instructor with extensive fabrication experience, and I design build
and install permanent and temporary public art in the DFW metroplex and beyond. Because we build
most of our sculptures in our own shop,we generally produce larger works for the budget. We take
safety very seriously and we have always met our deadlines.
We also have experience collaborating with a team of architects, board of directors and art consultants
while building and installing several large-scale sculptures at Spark! Dallas, Southside on Lamar, and
Hometown in North Richland Hills. We have been selected by the City of Dallas to build a sculpture for
South Lamar(in progress).
I hope you will consider us for your short-list, and for your project.
Kindest regards,

SETH VANDABLE
Letter of Intent-Wylie Animal Shelter
Dear Selection Panel Members,
I would be honored to design and install a site specific original work of art to enhance the Wylie Animal
Shelter. I am a Fellow Member of the N.S.S.- National Sculpture Society, specializing in heroic
monumental size bronzes. I live in the Dallas area, and would be hands on and fully available at every
stage of development, from design and site preparation to installation I have the experience to
complete the project on time and on budget.
As an animal lover and it would be especially meaningful to me to work on this project, creating a
timeless, meaningful sculpture for the shelter. I cast my bronzes at Schaefer Art Bronze, located in
Arlington Texas, further supporting the local economy. My close relationship with my foundry assures
the largest and highest quality sculpture for the budget. The monument will be finished and sealed in a
manner that requires NO future maintenance. Living only a few miles away from the site insures that the
funds budgeted for travel expenses will be applied directly towards the development of the
monumental sculpture.
My experience fits the needs of your project, and I am confident in my ability to create a meaningful
work of art that will add to the charm and appeal of the Wylie Animal Shelter, furthering its mission to
rescue and place happy animals.
I have created numerous public installations including one located in Casper, Wyoming, one of the
largest bronze Monuments in the world. I am easy to work with and would cherish the opportunity of
working to create this dramatic work of art that will stand for generations to come.
Thank you for your consideration of my qualifications. I look forward to the
opportunity of develop an enduring work of art that will exceed your expectations.
Sincerely,
Seth Vandable

PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION ITEMS
❑ Presentation of Call for Artists for the Wylie Animal Shelter Public Art
Project and Review of Jury Process with Café. (C. Ehrlich, Board Liaison)
Public Art Coordinator, Carole Ehrlich reviewed the Call for Artists with the committee. She pointed out
the theme for the project and budget items within the call. She asked the committee to be mindful of
these items as they review and score artists who apply for the project.
Ehrlich demonstrated the process to review, score and comment on Café as the committee juries the
prospective artists.
• Discussion regarding future dates for the selection process. (C. Ehrlich, Board
Liaison)
Staff and the committee reviewed possible future meeting dates. Ehrlich noted that at the end of the
call on January 22nd, if the board felt there were not enough applicants, the call could extended for
another week or two. She explained the dates were far enough apart to accomadate an extension.
The board directed staff to set February 22, 2018 as the date to meet and review the final scoring and
to take action on the 2-3 semi-finalists.
The board directed staff to set March 15, 2018 as the date to conduct a Community Input Meeting to
allow the public to have input with the semi-finalists as to what type of art they wished to see at the
Animal Shelter.
The board directed staff to set April 26, 2018 as the date for semi-final artists to present their proposals.
Ehrlich noted she would need to check with the Public Arts Advisory Board and the artists, once chosen
to insure they were available for the March 15th Community Input meeting and would report back to the
committee.
