Public Art Coordinator, Carole Ehrlich reviewed the Call for Artists with the committee. She pointed out
the theme for the project and budget items within the call. She asked the committee to be mindful of
these items as they review the scores of the top artists.
Ehrlich reported after removing a combined score of 3.4 or below, out of a 1-7 scoring, there were 9
artists left to review in order to select the 2-3 semi-finalists. Those remaining included: Robert Barnum,
Solomon Bassoff, Jeffie Brewer, James Burnes, James Dinh, Don Kennell, Wendy Klemperere,
Pascale Pryor, and Seth Vandable. She explained the committee would need to view each of these
artists and determine the artists they wished to see prepare a proposal for the project.
The committee carefully reviewed each artist, reviewing their past work, letter of interest, resume, and
materials/art from previous commissions.
• Discussion regarding future dates for the selection process. (C. Ehrlich, Board
Liaison)
The board directed staff to set March 22, 2018 as the date to conduct a Community Input Meeting to
allow the public to have input with the semi-finalists regarding what type of art they wished to see at the
Animal Shelter.
Ehrlich suggested waiting to set the date for the three presentations until she could discuss dates with

would take for each of them to complete their project presentations. She stated she would contact the
selection committee once a timeline was agreed upon.

Dear Carole,
I am more than happy to answer the following questions.Jamie was commissioned to create a large white tail deer
sculpture as a commemorative piece for my family. I worked closely with Jamie through the entire process and he was
pleasure to work with.Jamie was responsive to our requests and timeline and the sculpture was delivered and installed
in a timely fashion within budget.
The sculpture is located in the north woods of Wisconsin and despite exposure to extreme moisture, heat and long
winters, the piece has held up and truly gotten better with time.
We are very pleased with the piece Jamie commissioned. I hope you will have the opportunity to work with him.

Hi Carole,
I would highly recommend James Burnes for a commission.
He and I worked together on long term art loans rather than commissioned pieces. For many years,I worked as art
consultant for the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority(MCCA).
During my tenure at the MCCA,Jamie°s large scale bear sculpture was a favorite among convention audiences. His
dependability in terms of scheduling and communication made him a favorite artist for me as an administrator.
He is very committed to making art and also understands the parameters and challenges that are negotiated on his
behalf.
My very best wishes to you with this project
Sincerely,
Susan Merritt

Hi Liza,
Robert Barnum has been placed on a short list for an upcoming public art project. The City is commissioning a piece of
art (sculpture) for our Wylie Animal Shelter.
Robert has put you on his reference list and I wondered if you could answer a few questions for me,
• What type of art project were you and Robert involved with. Robert designed, built, and installed a two
dimensional aluminum metal relief for a spit along our main street in downtown Knoxville.
•
• Was the project completed on time and within budget. For Robert's part, yes. Robert was scheduled to install
his piece on Labor Day 2017, if the site had been constructed the way the RFP said, Robert's piece would have
come in at his original estimate. However, the City of Knoxville had given us incorrect information about the
construction materials of the site. Robert had the foresight to hire a local metal artist to go to the site and
inspect it. When the local artist inspected the site, he discovered that what Robert had been t was a concrete
backing was actually stucco backed by Styrofoam i When Robert notified the City of Knoxville about what his
local artist had discovered, the city had to completely reinforce the backing so that it would actually hold
Robert's piece. That, of course, took months. in the meantime, Robert needed to redesign his own piece to
accommodate the new construction and that redesign added $5,000 to the cost of the piece. It was not Robert's
fault. It .asn't until mid-December that Robert could come down to Knoxville and install his piece. It all turned
out fine.
•
• Has the art sculpture been sustainable and without much maintenance.Yes. We love it.
•
• Would you commission Robert again for another project.Absolutely,
•
• Any other comments you might have about artist Robert Barnum. He's a pro and a Weasure to fork tith No
reservations whatsoever!
Thank you so much for your time. We look forward to receiving your input.

Hi Sharon,
Robert Barnum has been placed on a short list for an upcoming public art project. The City is commissioning a piece of art
(sculpture) for our Wylie Animal Shelter.
Robert has put you on his reference list and I wondered if you could answer a few questions for me.
• What type of art project were you and Robert involved with.
Robert and I have worked on several projects together including wall murals one 90' wide and 3 stories high and one
10x12'.The larger one was actually 8 separate murals. We have also done a 6"xl2° metal wall sculpture as well as an
installation which included 4 freestanding aluminum figures.
• Was the project completed on time and within budget..
Yes, all were.
• Has the art sculpture been sustainable and without much maintenance.
1
Yes, with the exception of the freestanding figures being hit by a truck, which Robert repaired in a timely manner, all are
still well and beautiful,
• Would you commission Robert again for another project.
Yes, I'm actually working with him on another potential project as we speak,
• Any other comments you might have about artist Robert Barnum.
Robert's work is well crafted and creatively designed, He is a true professional and a pleasure to work with.
I have worked with dozens of Artists throughout my 30+ year career.
Not only do you get a beautiful, meaningful work of art but you have a great time in the process.
Thank you so much for your time. We look forward to receiving your input.

Hi Steve,
Don Kennell has been placed on a short list for an upcoming public art project. The City is commissioning a piece of art
(sculpture}for our Wylie Animal Shelter.
Don has put you on his reference list and I wondered if you could answer a few questions for me.
• What type of art project were you and Don involved with. A large hummingbird community entry piece in a
roundabout.
•
• Was the project completed on time and within budget. Yes.
•
• Has the art sculpture been sustainable and without much maintenance. Only been in place for just under a
year. No problems to date.
•
• Would you commission Don again for another project. Yes.
•
• Any other comments you might have about artist Don Kennell. The installation went particularly smooth. He
brought his own crew and did not need much from the City. Since installation in the middle of a street can be difficult,
we appreciated his organization.
Thank you so much for your time. We look forward to receiving you input.
Best Regards,
Carole

Subject: RE: Reference for Don Kennell
Carol,
am happy Don made it to your finalist round, l am copying my original answers here; my responses are the same, to the
same questions.
1) One of our methods of art acquisition is a "direct selection whereby an artist or a specific work by an individual artist
can be purchased for the Albuquerque Public Art Collection.
Don was a direct selection by a Neighborhood Association- they had some contact with the artist and a couple of the
Neighborhood Association members went to 'Don's studio in Santa Fe.
This neighborhood association was known to our program; we had collaborated with them on a number of occasions
and we had success with each venture, so we decided to put the matter up before the Albuquerque Arts Board, our
governing body, The Arts Board was enthusiastic about the neighborhood selection and we worked out a direct
purchase with Don, The neighborhood association paid for the transport and the large rock that the piece ("Red Rock
Roadrunner") sits on: Don and two of his assistants transported and installed the piece in a median at a busy
convergence of the neighborhood.
2), Yes to both questions.
3) It is fairly new (about 2 years on-site)so there hasn't been any need for maintenance, but I am very impressed with
the finish that Don applied- l feel certain it will withstand our challenging weather conditions for many years to come.
4) Absolutely- Don is an amenable character, friendly and forthcoming.. He is a professional and I would certainly
recommend him as a businessman and artist.
5) The work is extremely popular in the neighborhood and serves as a great wayfindiing device! I enjoyed working with
Don,
Best of luck with your process.

• What type of art project were you and Don involved with.
• Don was commissioned by The Greenway for a temporary artwork in Boston's Chinatown that
related to 2016's Chinese New Year -The Year of the Monkey(Fire). We chose him through an
RFP process, and was chosen for his unique way in sculpting animals that are playful and
engaging. Here is a link to the project he completed for

•
• Was the project completed on time and within budget.
• Yes, it was completed early in fact and right on budget with zero overage.
•
• Has the art sculpture been sustainable and without much maintenance.
• Yes. It was up for a full year and withstood the harsh New England climate. We had zero damage
throughout the entire year and even the color looked the same as it did when it was first installed.
Zero maintenance was need for his artwork. His materials are extremely durable and are easy to
install and remove.
•
• Would you commission Don again for another project.
• Most definitely. Don was a great artist to work and collaborate with. He was very responsive to all
communication and meetings, even with the time difference and was extremely professional from
beginning to end.
•
• Any other comments you might have about artist Don Kennel]
• Don has a wonderful personality and it shows through his artworks. The kids here in Boston
really loved his work for its over scale size and whimsicalness. If we had a bigger budget I am
sure he could have done an even better job in reimagining the space in which the artwork was
located. Highly recommended!
