PRESENTATIONS
DISCUSSION ITEMS
The Library Board members introduced themselves to new member Courtney Gober.
Rachel reviewed the Interiors Narrative that was presented to the architects. The staff
discussed the interiors and Ofilia Barrera, Youth Services Librarian, wrote the narrative.
Rachel reviewed a PowerPoint presentation about the interiors for the new library. Junaid
suggested that we add a walkway for the parking lot. He also suggested that we highlight
the "green" aspects of the building. The new library will have a permanent display
celebrating Rita and Truett Smith. The Friends already have $1,000 for the display case.
The children's area will be an enchanted forest because of its timeless theme. A huge
tree marks the entrance to the Children's area. The Story Time Room is a tree house. As
the children enter the Story Time Room, they will enter the interior of the tree house. The

interior of the Story Time Room will be soothing colors to prepare them for story time.
The interactive aspects will be in the children's area. The Story Time Room will have
one entrance/exit and will be locked when not in use. Puzzles and interactive activities
will be mounted to the wall and shelving. The young area is the first part of the
children's area. Rachel presented various examples of tree artists. Rachel will make a
presentation about the different artists.
The juvenile fiction and non-fiction area is the enchanted forest at night. The building
will reflect the growing up age of the nine to eleven year olds. The library recommends a
mural, perhaps with stars. This is a more mature space with special seating so that they
feel special as well. Crossing the aisle into the adult section, the interiors will continue to
reflect nature with the stone wall and end panels with a nature theme. Colors have not
been selected. The Bluebonnet Quiet Reading Room will reflect Wylie's history with
pictures. It is a well-lighted, technology-free environment. Grace described the carpet
sample at the last meeting as an impressionistic bluebonnet design.
Teen Center is now "Teen City". When walking into "Teen City" is like walking into a
graphic novel. It will be a stark contrast from the rest of the library. The staff did not
like the architect's ideas because they were not enough of a contrast to the rest of the
library. Grace described the architect's colors as dark and muted that would not appeal to
Teens. The colors will be bright with red and black colors and a black rubber floor. The
Teen Library Council selected some of the furniture that they liked for the room. The
Teens were really engaged in the conversation with the librarians. The exterior of the
Teen Room will be metal so it already has an industrial look. The library staff would like
to have an interactive art component to the room. Brodart has an interactive art wall that
will be investigated for durability. The Teen Room will also have computers, books,
magazines, and a television. The Teen Room has its own reference desk. There will
always be a staff member in the Teen Room.
The library will have separate desks for circulation, the adult department, children's
department, and Teen City. There will be computers in each area. Eric suggested a
shadow-type interactive art in the children's area that is found in museums.
The Library Board agreed to support the ideas in the presentation. Lucy Shriver is 100
percent behind the ideas, but can we support it budget-wise. Rachel said that there is a
certain amount of the $8.1 million goes to art. The Arts Board is looking at pulling the
money together to have something on the exterior. For libraries, having a finished
interior is the most important part. Raising about $500,000 for books is a priority.
Rachel has talked to Mindy about approaching businesses in addition to writing grants.
Rachel suggested that the Library Board advocate for art funds to be used in the interior.
The bond money covers the Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment. The trees will probably
be in an art fund.
Suggestions for improving the presentation include: scanning the floor design into the
presentation and explaining the visibility of the reference desks to the spaces.
Grace announced that training for the Book Sale is Saturday, August 2 from 9 a.m. to
10 a.m. Grace said that library board members are welcome to sort books anytime in
August.
