04-28-2010 (Animal Shelter) Minutes Wylie Animal Shelter Advisory Board CITY OF WYLIE Minutes Wylie Animal Shelter Advisory Board April 28, 2010 — 6:00 pm Wylie Municipal Complex— Council Chambers 2000 Highway 78 North CALL TO ORDER Announce the presence of a Quorum. Shelia Patton called to order at 6:39 pm. Board members present included: Lt. Mike Atkison, Carter Porter, Beverly Woodall, Dr. Chuck Kerin, and Shelia Patton. INVOCATION & PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Shelia Patton. BUSINESS ITEMS A. Consider and act upon approval of the Animal Advisory Board minutes of December 9, 2009. Board Action A motion was made by Carter Porter to accept December 9, 2009 Animal Shelter Advisory Board minutes of December 9, 2009 as presented. Dr. Chuck Kerin seconded to accept minutes. A vote was taken and the motion passed unanimously. DISCUSSION ITEMS B. Discuss economy impact related to animal surrender and services. Shelia Patton reported that the shelter has received an increase of surrender of animals being surrendered. This increase began in January of 2010. The shelter is being advised, this is due to in part to citizens needing to surrender animals due to relocation to housing that is not pet Minutes—April 28, 2010 Wylie Animal Shelter Advisory Board Page 1 friendly. Citizens are also stating the need to surrender animals due to financial difficulty in caring for their animals properly. Animal Control is also seeing an increase in community service calls for stray animals that are being abandoned on city streets and outlying areas. In addition, animal adoptions at the facility have declined. C. Discuss progression of long term plans for future growth and facility improvements. Lt. Mike Atkison is verifying whether or not the proposal to presented to council was approved for grant funding for a new air conditioning system to be installed in outside building in which animals are housed. Shelia Patton reported that the off leash play area for in house animals to socialize with potential adopters is on hold. Volunteers are awaiting response from local citizens and business owners to potentially donate materials and services for the project. Patton reported that the installation of cinder block divisions between outdoor run areas is estimated to cost two thousand dollars. Contractors will have to further evaluate the reinstallation of the top fencing to the kennels for proper containment of animals.
